316L Stainless Steel:
- 316L stainless steel is the most basic metal used for body jewelry. This is the most basic metal for using metals for initial piercing and healing. For most people, this type of steel works fine. Please note that it may contain nickel unless stated otherwise.
- 316L Stainless Steel Care: Simply cleanse using antibacterial soap and lukewarm water before inserting it. Avoid cleaning steel jewelry containing acrylic with alcohol or strong chemicals as it can damage the acrylic. For steel jewelry with gems, refrain from using alcohol or harsh chemicals as it may dissolve the adhesive that secures them. Opt for jewelry with bezel-set gems, which may be more expensive but are definitely worth the investment.
- Titanium is a preferred material for piercings. Titanium is as strong as steel, but as light as aluminum. It does not corrode, does not tarnish, It does not react to sunlight, salt-water, or any body chemistry. It is totally non-allergenic, It is a perfect solution for a sensitive body that are having problems with healing a piercing. Unfortunately, Titanium is also more expensive material, so the piercing and the jewelry are going to be a bit higher, but worth it! Titanium is usually preferred over steel because it contains no nickel and it weighs almost 50% less than steel. Titanium can come in plain polish which looks just like steel AND it can come in a variety of colors (but NOT red or black). Titanium is super for people with sensitive skin to steel. Titanium comes in different grades just like steel with Grade 23 (6AL4V ELI F-136) implant grade being the highest.
- Anodized Titanium: Anodizing is the electrolytic passivation process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts. In summary, passing electricity through the jewelry while it is in a solution, and in which alters the surface molecules. This modification changes the metal's outer layer, which affects the way it transmits and reflects light, enhancing its color in exquisite ways. Anodizing can make Titanium turn gold, rose gold, bronze, light and dark blue, purple, green, rainbow and many more. Anodized Titanium will not flake or peel, the color can fade over time, as is typical with any jewelry that comes into contact with your skin. However, do not worry, as the fading color will only expose titanium's natural finish, and it will not have any adverse effects on your piercings like other painted-on colors.
- Titanium Jewelry Care: Simply cleanse using antibacterial soap and lukewarm water before inserting it. You can also sterilize it completely by autoclaving. Anodized jewelry is less durable, as the colored titanium will fade over time. This is normal and won't harm your piercing. Wearing the piece in your mouth will cause the color to fade more quickly. To help your jewelry maintain its color for as long as possible, follow these tips: Avoid exposing it to chlorine and sweat. Oils in general are also known to fade colors, including skin oils and external oils found in skincare products. Use a mild, antibacterial soap to clean anodized titanium, and avoid over-washing it.

- Brass Jewelry Care: Like all types of jewelry, it is advisable to steer clear of alcohol, acidic substances, or any other harsh chemicals when cleaning your brass accessories. Such agents may harm the metal, especially if it has a layer of plating. Also, refrain from using any rough or abrasive materials to scrub the brass. Instead, opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush or a gentle cloth. For mildly soiled brass pieces, you can use warm water and mild soap to clean them. Rub gently with your fingers, wipe off the soap using a damp cloth, and then dry it right away. Avoid soaking the brass or exposing it to water for extended periods. In case the brass has tarnished, you can prepare a paste using baking soda and apply it using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Gently scrub the jewelry to eliminate the tarnish, then clean it using a damp cloth and drying it immediately. After cleaning your brass jewelry, always make sure to dry it right away, checking to make sure there's no water left in any crevices. Leaving your brass jewelry damp will cause it to tarnish all over again, eliminating the work you just did.
- Only 14k or 18k gold is appropriate for body jewelry (24k gold is too soft). 14k is the best as it is strong enough to maintain the threads for barbell etc. The higher grade of gold, the softer it gets. Lower grades than 14k could result in migration, rejection, or develop permanent reactions to gold.
- Do not clean with alcohol or other harsh chemicals. Simply wash with antibacterial soap and warm water before inserting into your piercing. Be gentle when screwing on balls as threads could easily strip. Over time gold can lose its luster from being within the body. All you need to do is lightly buff it back to its natural shine.
- Acrylic jewelry is ideal for well-healed piercings, being lightweight and comfortable. However, it is not suitable for new or unhealed piercings, nor for freshly stretched ones. It is important to note that acrylic jewelry worn in tongue piercings can release toxins. Therefore, for tongue piercings, dental acrylic is recommended. Autoclaving is not recommended for acrylic jewelry. To avoid warping, acrylic jewelry should not be boiled or exposed to direct sunlight or heat. It is best to clean acrylic jewelry with warm water and antibacterial soap. Avoid using alcohol or any harsh chemicals as they may damage the jewelry. When handling acrylic balls, take care not to thread them down too far as this may strip the threads. Acrylic jewelry is fragile and brittle, and may shatter when exposed to stress. To prevent warping and deformation, it is advisable not to leave acrylic jewelry in direct sunlight or heat.
PVD coated steel or titanium:
- Physical vapor deposition (PVD) describes a variety of vacuum deposition methods which can be used to produce thin films and coatings.PVD is characterized by a process where the material transitions from a condensed phase to a vapor phase and then back to a thin film condensed phase.It is a surface coating applied over a base metal (titanium or steel). The PVD coating on jewelry may deteriorate and potentially flake off over time. Do not use on unhealed or fresh piercings.
- If PVD coated jewelry is worn in an oral piercing, it has a much higher likelihood of fading or chipping than other piercings. Oral jewelry is subjected to significant wear and tear, and the coating may be affected differently by saliva depending on the individual. It may remain unaffected in some people, while in others, it may begin to fade in a week. The coating may also wear off due to the jewelry coming into contact with teeth, being rubbed, chewed, or bitten.
- Do not use alcohol or harsh chemicals to clean jewelry. Just use standard antibacterial soap and warm water to clean jewelry.
